Pointing out that imposition of frequent economic.
blockades along the two national highways has been causing serious problems to the people and as well as drivers and handymen, All Indian TradeUnion Congress (AITUC), Manipur State Committee has urged the government to set up and deploy highway protection force personnel along the highways for safe operation of drivers and handymen.
In a release AITUC Manipur said that around 500 vehicles are stranded along the two national highways following im position of economic blockade.
Noting that prices of essential commodities have sky rocketed leaving the commoners hapless contrary to traders earning huge profit by taking advantage of the economic blockade, AITUC also expressed concern that the ethnic conflict of over six months in the state is compounding the suffering of the people and drastically impacting the economy.
It is unfortunate that the government is indulging in temporary adjustments instead of finding a lasting solution to the impasse, it said.
The release urged the government to analyse how economic blockades in different parts of the country were ended and how solution was brought within in short span of time.
The union is prepared to launch protest if highway projection force is not deployed on the two national highways for safety of the drivers, it said, while cautioning that the government should bear all the responsibilities for the consequences.
