Union warns of strike demanding safety for drivers

All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union (AMRTDMU) has warned of launching agitation if the government continues to ignore the safety of drivers.
Members of the union led by its secretary Maimom Anil extended financial assistance to the bereaved family of driver late Mutum Maningou of Phougakchao Ikhai by visiting the Moirang Santhong Awang Leikai relief camp where the family is staying, on Thursday.
Interacting with the media, Anil said that several drivers have been left stranded along the NH 37 due to the economic blockade called by All Naga Students' Association Manipur (ANSAM) and the union has been providing essential items to the stranded drivers and handymen in Keithelmanbi and Noney areas.
At the same time, members of Hill Area Drivers' Union and Oinamlong Drivers and Handymen Care Welfare Union have been helping the stranded drivers and handymen in Nungba area.
Amid the current crisis in the state, transporters have been doing their service despite facing numerous challenges.
Leaving them stranded in the hill areas during this crisis due to the economic blockade of ANSAM is a serious concern for the transporters.
All Jiribam Road Transport Drivers' Union has been demanding the government to ensure safe passage of the transporters.
Prolonging the economic blockade will force the transporters to launch strike as they cannot tolerate their sufferings, he said, while demanding the government to take up necessary steps to resolve the impasse surrounding the economic blockade.
On the other hand, he said, driver Maningou died in a road accident in Kambiron area on October 30.His body was handed over to the union by members of Oinamlong Drivers and Handymen's Care Welfare Union, The union, after completing post mortem examination, took the body to his family members at Santhong Awang Leikai relief camp, where his last rites were conducted.
Maningou is survived by his wife and two children.
Apart from the financial assistance provided by the union , they will ensure that the bereaved family gets the insurance at the earliest, Anil assured, while sharing the grief and pain of the bereaved family.
