Imphal, November 09 2023:
Thawai Mirel has called upon the people of Manipur to stage hunger strike on the day of Ningol Chakkouba instead of celebrating the festival as a mark of protest against the government's failure to contain on-going violence and restore peace.
Addressing a press meet at its office at Singjamei Wangma Kongba Road, Thawai Mirel co-convenor Paonam Sanahanbi said that the crisis has completed six months but the government has not been able to bring a solution.
Instead of resolving the situation, the Central and state governments seem to be relishing suffering of the people, she opined.
The co-convenor further said that several people have been killed and many have gone missing.
Thousands of families are rendered homeless and they have been taking refuge in various relief centres.
Unfortunately, no concrete steps could be seen taken up from the side of government to restore peace till date except for announcing ex-gratia.
Women and youth are spending sleepless nights on the streets.
In such a situation, several organisations have been calling to forego Ningol Chakkouba festival in solidarity with the displaced people.
Endorsing the call, Thawai Mirel is appealing to all to observe hunger strike on the day, she said while expressing belief that people of the state will support the appeal.
