Imphal, October 17 2023: October 18 marks a red letter day in the history of Manipur as it was on this day in 1948 that the first Manipur Assembly based on adult franchise and resting on the premises of equality, fraternity and co-existence of all sans discrimination on the basis of community affiliation, caste or religious divide was convened.

A sort of a historic moment as it was the emergence of the first democratically elected Government, the earliest in the sub-continent.

The principles on which the first Assembly was convened is all that more significant, when Manipur is wracked by the over five months old ethnic clash that has claimed the lives of hundreds of people, displaced thousands and left many missing.
