Imphal, April 03 2024:
Transgender activist Malem Thongam, who has been fasting in pursuance of the demand for restoration of peace in the strife-torn state, disclosed plans to continue the agitation at gates of private residences and official quarters of valley MLAs from April 5 till conduct of the Lok Sabha elections.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday, Malem opined that the state government could have averted the humanitarian crisis but failed to do so as it could not take any firm decision without the centre's approval.
He also ridiculed the incumbent government assuring the public that the crisis in the state will be solved within short notice if its candidate is voted in the upcoming Lok Sabha election regardless of the fact the people of the state have been suffering for the last many months.
When the BJP led government in the state cannot even sent a letter to the Prime Minister urging him to visit the state and solve the crisis, how can the BJP rule Manipur and save its people, he wondered.
Malem Thongam also said that he has decided to take up fasting agitation at the MLAs' place of residency from April 5 to denounce indifferent attitude of the MLAs to suffering of the people and instead focusing on the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
He also sought the support and cooperation of meira paibis in his agitation and the public to show that the people of Manipur are against holding of elections in the state during this time of crisis.
