Imphal, August 14 2023:
A sit-in demonstration was held at Thangmeiband Meisnam Leikai Ima Panthoibi Mandop organised by Peace, Restoration and Rehabilitation Committee of Manipur (PERERECOM) on Monday against the "Churachandpur gang rape" case.
Huge number of people from Thangmeiband area took part in the demonstration where the protestors used placards which read "Prime Minister should look with an equal eye to the gang rape of a Meitei woman and hand over the case to CBI", "Protect the territorial integrity of Manipur" and "Viral video is handled by the CBI, will the real incident of the rape case be swept under the carpet? " .
Taking part at the protest, committee president Jyotin Waikhom said that Manipur has a 2000-year old written history and it has been an independent kingdom ever since.
The people of Manipur had successfully defeated attempts to destroy the sovereignty and territorial integrity on many occasions.
Even to this day, we will not leave any stone unturned to save territorial integrity of Manipur.
If needed we are ready to sacrifice our lives for our motherland.
Manipur cannot be computed with Mizoram as Manipur joined the Indian union as an independent kingdom, he said.
Urging the state and the central government to treat every community equally, Jyotin said that it is very unfortunate for the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to shame the whole Meitei community to the Whole world over the naked parading of two Kuki women which went viral in social media but remained silent when a Meitei woman was gang raped by armed Kuki militants in Churachandpur.
The Prime Minister should take up initiative to hand over the case to CBI.
Meanwhile, the sit-in protest also adopted a number of resolutions which included - state government should rebuild villages, rebuilding houses and schools destroyed in the violence in their respective places so to enable protecting the territorial integrity pf Manipur, stop-gap arrangements of fabricated houses will not be satisfactory unless the displaced people are permanently made to stay in these houses, handing over of Churachandpur gang rape case to CBI.
Maintaining that Meeteis do not consider all the Kukis as poppy planters or drug lords, the protest called for stop blaming the whole community for a crimes committed by some people, while calling for measures to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.
