Chennai, August 14 2023:
Two educational institutions based in Chennai namely Madras Christian College (MCC) and Loyola College have come out to help the students of Manipur who have been affected by the ethnic violence and are not in a position to pursue higher studies due to the conflict.
While MCC will be providing free education to students of the state who are victims of the riot without charging any fees for tuition, mess and hostel fees, Loyala College will be providing concession in fees to the students from the north east state.
MCC principal Paul Wilson said that as of now at least 10 students including two female students have shown interest in getting admission to various streams including bachelor's degree in Political Science, Geography, BSc Hospitality and Tourism in the college for the academic year 2023-24.He said that voluntary organisations have sent a fist of 17 students preferring to get admitted to the college.
But after verification, only 10 of them showed interest in the getting admitted.
Though there has been huge problems in getting in touch with the students, who are mostly displaced people, due to the internet shutdown in the state, the students are going to the nearest place where internet wifi is available and managed to upload their mark-sheets.
These students will be admitted to the college according to marks obtained and their choice of stream.
Paul Wilson further informed that the college will not charge any fees for tuition.
The mess and hostel fees will be arranged through the support of the faculty members and by raising funds.
The students will be provided 2 to 3 weeks' time for reaching Chennai.
Loyola College principal A Louis Arockiaraj SJ said that as of now a total of 5 students have been enrolled in the college in social work and other courses.
The college will provide concession in their tuition and hostel fees.
There are also a number of students from Manipur who are interested in joining degree courses in the college.
Many voluntary organisations are also approaching the various colleges in Tamil Nadu for admitting students in higher studies, he added.
