Imphal, December 07 2023:
The Green Foundation launched a month-long Soil Month campaign aimed at soil conservation at Khachikhul in Imphal West on Thursday.
The campaign is being organised in association with Kha Nongchup Pukkei Langei Organic Producers' Company Limited, a farmers' producer company formed under Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER).
The campaign will mainly revolve around making Oompost from stubbles and leftover straws in the paddy field.
Experts of Green Foundation led by its advisor and crop solution consultant Dr M Thoithoi demonstrated the practice of composting using microorganisms in the paddy fields on the first day.
Interacting with farmers, Thoithoi said that burning stubbles not only pollutes the air but also destroys valuable microorganisms.
In most of the paddy fields, straws lie wasted except for some utilisation for cattle and mushroom farming.
One Sangam (0.63 acre approximately) produces 1.37 to 1.7 ton of straws.
Instead of burning them, letting them decompose in the held will promote regeneration of soil health.
Farmers can use microorganisms to ensure proper decomposition of the straws, which will be beneficial in the farming practice, he said.
