Imphal, December 22 2023:
While noting with regret that MLAs are avoiding the very constituents who elected them and the chief minister continues to assert peace is returning despite not visiting Churachandpur personally, Imagi Meira has demanded an urgent convening of the Privilege & Ethics Committee of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and initiation of punitive action against the 10 'separatist' MLAs.
In a press conference held at Manipur Press Club on Friday, convenor Th Sujata confided that in connection with the proposed meeting, Imagi Meira attempted to meet Privilege & Ethics Committee chairman MLA Sapam Nishikant and five other members - MLAs Abdul Nasir, Okram Surjakumar, Md Ashab Udin, RK Imo, and Sanasam Premchand.
However, they were unable to meet the elected representatives.
Expressing disappointment, Sujata reiterated Imagi Meira's consistent plea for stringent action against the ten MLAs who allegedly abetted the conflict in Manipur.
Despite assurances to hold the meeting by Friday, the Committee failed to convene the same.
When Imagi Meira approached the MLAs for an explanation, some were found to be out-of-station and others in Delhi for medical treatment.
Questioning the credibility of the committee members, Sujata urged the Committee to convene the meeting within a week and take necessary action against the separatist MLAs.
She cautioned that failure to do so would provoke public agitation, for which the responsibility would rest upon the members of Committee.
Highlighting the public's scepticism regarding inaction against the ten MLAs, Sujata raised concerns about the feigned ignorance of other MLAs.
Furthermore, she questioned the selective targeting of the Meetei community amid the conflict situation in-spite of the authorities well aware that the violence has the involvement of elements inimical to interest of India and national integrity.
