Imphal, February 12 2024:
Manipur Meitei Pangal Welfare Organisation (MMWO) vice president Amin Moijingmayum has urged the state government to prevail upon the central government to exempt the income tax for the people of Manipur for this year in view of the poor economic status of the state.
In a press meet held at MMWO office, Hatta on Monday, Amin said that the prevailing conflict, which broke out on May 3 last year, has put a huge burden on the people, not to mention the instability brought by the strife.
Thousands have been displaced from their home and hearth, businesses affected and many left without jobs or source of livelihood.
Many who had availed loans from banks start their businesses are unable to repay the loans or the interests, Amin pointed out.
As such, he urged banks to relax the pressure on loanees with regard to payment of interests or monthly instalments since the market is down.
He further urged both the central and state governments to exempt/waive the loans, while also appealing to the state government to propose to the central government to exempt the income tax for this year, and not to put any undue pressure on the people until the conflict subsides.
