Kuki militants attack Pukhao, Uyumpok; 1 hurt

Imphal, February 12 2024:
One village volunteer sustained bullet injury as heavily armed Kuki militants attacked Meitei villages in the peripheral areas of Imphal East district since last night.
Kuki militants launched a fierce attack against village volunteers who have been guarding Meitei villages of Uyumpok, Pukhao Shanti-pur and adjoining villages.
A late report said that Kuki militants also opened fire at Sinam Kom and Tairenpokpi today.
The village defenders also returned fire but there is no report of injury on either side.
Taking position on Khamenlok Mathak Ching and Pukhao Shantipur Mamang Ching, Kuki militants attacked the village volunteers using bombs and bullets since around 9.30 pm yesterday.
The village volunteers retaliated by opening fire toward the Kuki militants so as to prevent them (Kuki militants) from advancing further toward Meitei villages.
In the continuing battle, one village volunteer was hit by a bullet suspected to have been fired from a sniper rifle this evening.
The village volunteer who sustained bullet injury around the armpit, has been evacuated from the spot and admitted to Raj Medicity.
He is presently undergoing treatment in stable condition, sources informed.
Meanwhile, a large number of womenfolk also came out on the roads and diverted vehicles coming along the roads to give free passage to ambulances carrying injured village volunteers.
Additional teams of security personnel have rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control.
The situation was very tense and heavy firing was going on till the time of filing this report late in the evening.
Village volunteers and security personnel have been maintaining a strict vigil and taking positions to defend themselves from the attack of Kuki militants armed with sophisticated weapons, said the sources.
The sources said that there might be some casualties on the side of Kuki militants.
