Ukhrul, January 16 2024:
Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah briefed a three-member peer team from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on the pressing need for accreditation of Pettigrew College, the only government-run college in the district.
The peer team arrived here on Tuesday on a two-day visit to conduct an assessment of the college for possible accreditation of the institution.
The team comprised RKDF University, Madhya Pradesh vice chancellor Dr Vijay Kumar Agrawal; The English and Foreign Languages University, Telangana Department of Translation Studies professor Dr Tharakeshwar VB; and SD College of Education, Punjab principal Dr Tapan Kumar Sahu.
On Tuesday, MLA Ram Muivah hosted lunch for the team and interacted with the members at Megan Hills in Ukhrul town.
During the interaction, Ram Muivah explained to the NAAC officials about the importance of NAAC accreditation for the college.
"Ukhrul district might be the only district in Manipur without a NAAC-accredited college".
"But without NAAC, Ukhrul district is deprived of BEd and without BEd, youth of Ukhrul district are deprived of teacher recruitment opportunities as BEd is now mandatory to become a teacher," he told the visiting team.
However, the MLA also shared some positive developments regarding the infrastructure of the college.
He informed the team that the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs has sanctioned Rs 38 crore for the construction of boys and girls hostel, administrative block, compound walls, internal roads, playground, and toilets.
Additionally, North Eastern Council (NEC) has sanctioned Rs 2.5 crore for the construction of a library building, which is nearing completion.
Drawing the attention of the visiting team, he said that Pettigrew College, which was established in 1965, is the second-oldest college in the state and has a rich history.
"Ukhrul district holds an important place in history, as the first school in Manipur hills was started here in 1896," Ram Muivah said, adding that the college boasts of an illustrious list of alumni, including notable names like Maj Bob Khathing, Yangmaso Shaiza and Rishang Keishing.
Meanwhile, upon their arrival earlier in the morning, the NAAC officials met the administration and faculty of the Pettigrew College.
The peer team will evaluate the college's performance in various areas such as teaching, learning, research, infrastructures, administration and other responsibilities of the institute during the course of the two-day visit.
