NPF names Kachui Timothy Zimik for Outer seat

Imphal, March 20 2024: Naga People's Front (NPF) has named Kachui Timothy Zimik, a retired Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, as its candidate for the II-Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency for the upcoming 18th Lok Sabha election.

The Working Committee of NPF approved the name of Kachui Timothy Zimik as the party's candidate for the Outer seat for the Lok Sabha Election 2024 during a meeting held on Wednesday at the NPF Central Office, Kohima, Nagaland.

The decision was announced by the NPF's Central Working Committee (WC) following a crucial meeting on Wednesday.

The party ticket will be distributed to the 62-year-old candidate on Thursday at the central office.

Zimik, a retired principal chief commissioner of Income Tax under the ministry of Finance (Revenue), will replace the sitting NPF parliamentarian Dr Lorho S Pfoze.

Zimik was a research scholar at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi before he became an IRS cadre.

Born on January 14, 1962 at Lungphu village in Ukhrul district but presently a resident of Sinakeithei village, Timothy Zimik held the post of president of North-East Officers & Professionals Welfare Association, Kolkata; chairman of Guwahati Christian Fellowship; advisor to Naga Students' Union, Mumbai; president of Tangkhul Students' Union, Delhi; and general secretary of Tangkhul Students' Union, Shillong, among others.

His educational qualifica tions include management programme at IIM, Bangalore and executive management programme in Washington and Syracuse, USA (2011) and Ottawa, Canada (1997).As the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax from 1985 till 2022, Timothy worked in the Income Tax Department that collects revenues for the country.

Timothy held many important positions in his department while posted in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and other cities of India.

The announcement of Timothy comes following a period of speculation and anticipation regarding the NPF's choice for the parliamentary seat.

Nagaland MLA and NPF secretary general, Achumbemo Kikon had earlier informed that the party's Central Office received applications from four individuals, including sitting MP, vying for the NPF ticket for the Outer Manipur seat.

To ensure a thorough and impartial selection process, Kikon had said that the party established a Search Committee tasked with identifying the rightful candidate to contest the Lok Sabha polls.

The Committee's meeting on March 18 failed to arrive at a consensus candidate.

Prior to the official declaration, sitting NPF MP Dr Lorho S Pfoze had expressed confidence in his candidacy, positioning himself as the party's potential consensus candidate for the constituency.

Manipur has two Lok Sabha constituencies: Inner Manipur constituency, encompassing the Meetei-majority valley areas, and the Outer Manipur constituency, designated for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

The Lok Sabha elections in Manipur will be conducted in two phases, with the Inner Manipur seat scheduled for polling on April 19, while voters in the Outer Manipur constituency will cast their votes on April 19 and 26.Meanwhile, the NPF working committee also deliberated on the application received from Happa Taidong seeking the party ticket for the upcoming Assembly Election in Arunachal Pradesh and resolved to further examine the party 's position before allotting the ticket, according to an NPF meeting resolution released on Wednesday.
