Jiribam Peace Committee resolves to uphold harmony

The Jiribam Peace Committee convened at Kadamtala, Jiribam, at the premises of 39th Assam Rifles, with committee chairperson Tahemang Panmei presiding over the meeting on Saturday, and discussed on its one-year journey since its formation in May 2023 with a primary objective of preventing ethnic violence in the district and surrounding areas.
Reflecting on the accomplishments of the past year, the committee noted that its regular monthly meetings had contributed significantly to maintaining peace and security in the area.
Amidst this period, the area had experienced a commendable absence of major violence, attributing this success to the concerted efforts of various stakeholders, including Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), communities, security forces such as 39 Assam Rifles, 87 CRPF, Jiribam and Tamen-glong Police, and others.
Expressing gratitude for the tireless efforts and commitment of all involved parties, the Peace Committee reaffirmed its dedication to upholding the resolutions previously adopted.
These resolutions had served as pillars in fostering communication among communities, dispelling misunderstandings, and addressing apprehensions, the meeting observed.
However, the meeting did not shy away from addressing recent incidents that posed threats to peace, security, and harmony in the region.
The Committee jointly condemned several incidents, including the attack on lOCL tankers near Tollen Kaimai on April 16, civilian detainment by armed miscreants in Sejang - Mongbung on April 30, torching of abandoned properties in Uchathol on May 2, and the incident of bomb explosion on a Manipur police check-post at Leingangpokpi near Phaitol in the night of May 2 .
Highlighting the persistent efforts of miscreants to disrupt peace, the Committee emphasised the need for unity among community members to isolate and boycott such elements effectively.
It urged all residents to stand united in preserving the hard-earned peace that had prevailed over the past year.
In light of recent challenges, the Committee adopted a series of resolutions aimed at ensuring the continued peace and security of the region.
These resolutions included ensuring free movement, prohibiting civilian bunkers, & handling unlicensed weapons,according'to the law, ensuring the safety of NH 37, supporting the unhindered movement of security forces, and reporting incidents affecting public peace to the appropriate authorities.
Moreover, the Committee emphasised the, importance of adhering to legal procedures, preserving abandoned properties, combatting the spread of fake news, and refraining from unnecessary press releases that could escalate tensions.
