The Manipur High Court has admitted the writ petition filed in connection with the failure of the State Government to pay a monetary compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of Palungbam Kunjabihari Bose of Lairikyengbam Makha Leikai and Ningthoujam Ananda Singh of Moirangkampu Sajeb Makha Leikai who were killed in a fake encounter on January 21, 2009 .
The High Court of Manipur, on August 2, 2023, admitted the writ petition filed by Subhas Chakma, Director of National Campaign Against Torture, Soijam Anju Devi, w/o Kunjabihari Bose and Ningthoujam Edina Devi, w/o Ananda Singh who named the State of Manipur reprsented by the Chief Secretary and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) as respondents.
The NHRC, had on March 5, 2023, recommended the Government to pay a monetary relief to the next of kin of the two deceased but the State of Manipur hasn't enforced the same.
The Court then directed the Government to comply with the recommendation of the NHRC and pay Rs 5 lakh each to the wives of the deceased within twelve weeks (from the date of receipt of a copy of the order) .
