Imphal, June 01 2012:
The development of handloom and handicrafts in a state like Manipur is the need of the hour since there are no fully developed industries, observed Govindas Konthoujam, Minister of Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur.
He was speaking at the presentation of State Handicrafts Awards organized by Commerce and Industries Department at the Food Processing Training Hall of the Directorate of Commerce and Industries, Porompat today.
The Minister pointed out that Manipur is ranked third in the field of Handloom and Handicrafts in India.
In order to increase the demand of handloom and handicrafts products of the state, scientific technologies should be used in with a touch of our culture and tradition and at the same time provide a marketing outlet for these products.
If there is no market to sell the products of the artisans and no fairs are organized where the artisans can display their products and made known to the public, the interest of the artisans would wane, he suggested.
Noting that Handloom and handicrafts play a major role in the Gross Domestic Product of the state, the Minister stressed on the need to encourage the artisans engaged in production of handloom and handicrafts products in the state by the people and the authority concerned.
The Minister further stated that the people of Manipur should take full advantage of the Look East Policy and the introduction of railways in the state.
If we cannot keep up with the changing trend, Manipur will be treated as a garbage dumping ground by the people of South East Asian countries and mainland India.
Over and above this, indigenous people of the state would be wiped out ultimately, he cautioned.
Delivering the Presidential address, O Nabakishore, Principal Secretary of Commerce and Industries, said that the unemployment problem in the state has been solved to a large extent through development of handloom and Handicrafts industries.
Since the handloom and handicraft products of Manipur have great demand among foreign tourists, the artisans should form an association of their own and make use of all the benefits being provided by the state and Union government to promote their products.
