Noney, March 09 2024:
Tragedy struck Khongsang village in Noney district on Saturday afternoon when a sudden landslide claimed the life of a 4-year-old boy, named, Rigunguang Phaomei, son of Damchuilung Phaomei of the village.
The incident occurred near Khongsang police station, along NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam Road), burying the child in debris as he and three other minors were returning home from school.
Eyewitnesses reported that the landslide occurred abruptly, catching the children off guard.
Unfortunately, Rigunguang Phaomei was buried alive, while two other boys sustained injuries and were rushed to Nungba CHC for treatment.
Miraculously, one child escaped unharmed.
The victim was a student at JRMA School, Khongsang.
The injured boys have been identified as Thaithuilung Kamei (11) and Ringkhuanlung Kamei (7), both sons of Abraham Kamei of Khongsang village.
Villagers attributed the tragedy to the negligence of the construction company, KCC, which is responsible for the double cutting of NH -37 in the area under NHIDCL supervision.
They claimed that the company failed to implement proper slope benching cutting measures, resulting in unstable soil conditions that led to the landslide.
The incident occurred at around 12:45 pm, and after half an hour of excavation using excavators, the child's body was recovered.
