Imphal, February 02, 2011:
A one day workshop on National Incentive for Child Protection was held today in the conference hall of Anthropolgy Department, Manipur University.
The workshop was organised by the Child Line Imphal under the sponsorship of National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development, New Delhi with the support of Child Line Foundation India.
The workshop was attended by Pradhans and Panchayats of Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
The main focus of the workshop was proper protection of children and ensuring all their requirements.
Speaking at the workshop, the Pradhans observed that 2010 recorded the highest cases of child trafficking in the last five/six years.
They also expressed their desire to enable Panchayats take active role in protection of children by providing them information, education and communication materials, and also to organise sensitisation programmes at the Panchayat level.
The provision of Rs 27 each per day given to children living in orphanages after they were rescued from trafficking is too little to meet even the most basic requirements of the children, they observed.
Because of these meagre provision, most of the orphanages could not be run properly.
They also stressed on the need to make all the items being provided by Social Welfare Department and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Department accessible to orphanages and children homes.
