Displaced folks pledge to return home

Imphal, August 30 2023:
Months away from home, people from Leimakhong Chingmakhong who fled after Kuki militants attacked their village and razed their houses to the ground have said that they will move back to their places despite all the looming threats.
Souding a warning, they asked the Government to take all responsibility if anything bad happens to them after they resettle at their native places.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club today, a displaced Phuritsabam Jeevan Meetei from Leimakhong Chingmang said that several people from his village have been taking refuge at Khurkhul Kanto after Kuki militants attacked their village.

Asking how long people can survive at relief camps, he said that prolonging the violence and the Government failing to work out any solution has put the displaced folks in a very difficult position.
Many sick and persons with disability are living a horrible life at relief camps with their future uncertain, Jeevan maintained and added that one displaced Meitei-Christian died at Khurkhul Kanto relief camp recently.
There was a problem in finding the burial site of the deceased as he was a Christian but the same was sorted out after consulting with the Naga brothers and sisters and he was laid to rest, Jeevan recalled.
Unfortunately, none of the family members attended the last rites of the deceased as they all have been separated by the violence, he sighed.
Saying that there are more sick people at the relief camp, Jeevan asked if the Government wants the displaced people to spend the rest of their lives taking refuge in their own land.
What about the children and their studies who also have been displaced for no fault of theirs, he further asked.
Urging the Government to bring a lasting solution so that they could return home, he said that Leimakhong Chingmang, however, is surrounded by Kuki villages and as such adequate security forces must be deployed in the area.
Jeevan continued that leaders of Kuki and Meitei held regular talks in the presence of Leimakhong Army in the initial stage of the conflict but the violence ended up landing in Leimakhong too, he added.
"The innocent Meitei villagers trusted the resolution taken to maintain peace during the meetings but the Kukis betrayed us in the end and forced us to take refuge elsewhere," he claimed.
Asking the Government to at least deploy Village Defence Force at their village if there is shortage of police personnel so that they could restart their lives, Jeevan said that they will return home even if the Government doesn't care about them and their safety.
Further stating that their village is surrounded by Kuki villages and the Army prevented them from returning to their homes, Jeevan said that Kukis are doing whatever they want at their village.
The Kukis are hellbent on preventing Meiteis from entering the Leimakhong area and if we act in the same way then the scene will be very unpleasant, he warned and asked the Government to do the needful at the earliest.
