₹89,84,759 earmarked for Meetei Mayek translation of judgments

The state government has made a budgetary provision of Rs 89,84,759 to the High Court of Manipur for the translation of reported judgments of the High Court and the Supreme Court (Annexure- 'A') to Meetei Mayek and Roman Alphabet (Manipuri) .
A release issued by High Court of Manipur joint registrar (Judl.) CPC Subham Vashist informed that the High Court, under the chairmanship of AI-Assisted Legal Translation Advisory Committee, High Court of Manipur chairperson Justice A Bimol Singh and member Justice A Guneshwar Sharma, an initiative to translate High Court and Supreme Court judgments to Meetei Mayek and Roman alphabet (Manipuri) was taken up.
The sanctioned amount of Rs 89,84,759 will be utilised to engage translators who possess in-depth knowledge of legal terminology and expertise in translating judgments, the release stated, while informing that the High Court recently signed an MOU with NIT Manipur for the development of translation software from English to Manipuri in Meetei Mayek and Roman script.
In addition, the High Court has proposed to the state government to create a post of Registrar (Linguistic) equivalent to a district judge rank and seven posts of junior translators.
Additionally, the committee is taking steps to start an online journal for publishing reported judgments of the Supreme Court and the High Court in English, Meetei Mayek and Roman alphabet (Manipuri), it added.
