Imphal, August 30 2023:
To take stock of the situation at the different relief centres set up across the State, Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Chairperson Justice UB Saha today inspected a Meitei locality at Churachandpur and visited relief camps in Imphal and Churachandpur today.
The MHRC Chairperson took a helicopter from Imphal Airport for Churachandpur this morning.
On two earlier occasions, the MHRC Chairperson had to cancel his visit to the trouble-torn district despite receiving clearance from the Manipur Home Department due to security reasons as cited by the Police Head Quarters.

Notably, Justice UB Saha inspected Thengra Meitei Leikai, an area where the Meitei community used to reside in Churachandpur.
It was found that the place had been completely razed and levelled to the ground. The MHRC Chairperson advised the District Administration to protect the land to ensure that the Meitei residents who have fled to relief centres can be re-settled.
He also interacted with displaced people from Kangpokpi district sheltering at Don Bosco Relief Camp.
The Chairperson personally listened to the complaints of the inmates while MHRC also took stock of some complaints on the spot.
In the afternoon, after coming back to Imphal, the MHRC Chairperson accompanied by member KK Singh, Secretary Roshita Haobam and Law Officer Wareppam Basantakumar also visited the relief camp opened at Ideal Girls' College, Akampat, Imphal East where more than 900 displaced persons both from Churachandpur and Moreh are lodged.
The MHRC team inspected the living conditions of the displaced persons and enquired after their basic necessities including the educational needs of their children.
The inmates also complained about lack of medical supplies in the camp and rued over the dearth of proper arrangements for education of the children.
Justice UB Saha also noticed certain unhygienic areas in the relief camp which could spark health concerns and thus advised the Deputy Commissioner, Imphal East who was also present at the camp to go over the inmates' complaints so that their grievances can be addressed immediately.
Further, he advised the District Administration officials to launch income generating undertakings, such as selling disinfectants made by the inmates to help them earn a livelihood.
Justice UB Saha went on to assert that the activities of the Commission have no connection with any political matter.
The Commission is only concerned with ensuring that the relief camp inmates and the citizens of Manipur are not deprived of their fundamental rights.
However, the inability of the Government to ensure a peaceful life for its citizens is also a form of violation of human rights, he said.
