Wildlife products worth ' 1 crore seized, burnt

Imphal, June 09 2012:
Wild life products worth around Rs 1 crore which were smuggled from China/Myanmar but seized while being transported through Manipur were burnt down to ashes at Manipur Forest Training School, Kirengei today.
The destroyed wild life products included scales of pangolin, tiger skins and rhino horns.
They were seized by Forest and Customs department during the period from 2010 to 2011 March.
Speaking to media persons, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Park and Sanctuary, L Joykumar said that trading of wild life products has been banned under the Wild Life Protection Act, 1972 .
These products stand next to drugs and narcotics and it is equivalent to trading heroin.
