Imphal, June 09 2012:
One man who reportedly chastised some children not to muddy river water was pulled up and freed later by personnel of Khongjom police outpost after he was subjected to severe thrashing together with his son.
Sapam Babu (65) and his son Brojendro (37) of Khongjom Sapam Leikai were subjected to severe thrashing by a police team led by the OC Khongjom police outpost before they were freed.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here this afternoon, Babu said that a rivulet known as Maringshoi flows in his neighbourhood.
As the river bed has dried up, people were collecting water by making small excavations.
However, these tiny water pools were often ravaged by children of the locality.
On seeing this, Babu scolded the children not to muddy the water this morning.
However, instead of chastising the children, their parents came out and boldly said that the children were ravaging the pools at their instruction.
This led to a heated altercation at about 9.30 am today.
A few minutes later, a team of Khongjom police outposts came to the house of Babu and pulled him up together with his son Brojendro.
The father and son were freed only after they were assaulted mercilessly.
Saying that they were victimised by police because of wrong information given by Gram Panchayat Member Sapam Ranjita, Khongjom Circle Meira Paibi publicity secretary has strongly condemned the unwarranted assault on the father-son duo.
She also demanded that the Khongjom outpost OC should be suspended.
