Imphal, July 29 2022:
Volunteers of Joint Coordination Committee on Wildlife & Biodiversity (JCCWB), Manipur released a rescued Black-crowned night heron (chongkhu) at Ikop Pat today.
The bird release event was attended by Sub-Inspector Moirang, Palli Sh Tomchou and his team and members of Leipat Citizens Club, Khangabok.
It is worth noting that members of Leipat Citizens Club, Khangabok had handed over one black-crowned night heron (chongkhu) and a watercock (uthum) to volunteers of JCCWB Manipur after the birds flew into residential areas under the jurisdiction of the Club.
Leipat Citizens Club contacted JCCWB after club members rescued a seemingly blind and injured black-crowned night heron.
Volunteers of JCCWB picked up the bird and provided it with necessary care to nurse it back to health, after which it was released.
Speaking on the occasion, Romesh Ningthoujam, convenor JCCWB, said that black-crowned night herons are nocturnal birds that inhabit the banks of lakes.
"However, due to continued degradation of their habitat, they have started frequenting residential areas", he added.
Romesh Ningthoujam expressed his anguish over the nonimplementation of various Acts and rules passed to conserve the environment while highlighting the degradation of Loktak lake and inaction of relevant authorities in this regard.
He further appealed to the people to contact any local wildlife clubs or organisations if they stumble upon these birds and release them in a suitable area.
