Imphal, December 05 2015 :
If Imphal city should be developed as a Smart city, it should be developed in such a manner that it is barrier free and friendly to persons with disabilities, suggested former State Commissioner for Persons With Disabilities Laishram Ibomcha.
Chapter VIII, Sections 44, 45 and 46 of the Persons with Disabilities Act 1995 should be taken into account while planning for a Smart city, said the former Commissioner from Wangkhei Lou- rembam Leirak.
Some of the mandatory provisions listed in these sections are making necessary arrangements which can enable persons with disabilities board and alight from public transport systems without difficulty, providing wheel- chairs, curve cuts and slopes on foot-paths and waiting sheds, engravings on zebra crossings for blind people, installation of ramps at all Government offices, hospitals and public buildings, installation of Braille symbols and auditory signals at lifts etc.
Imphal city would become a very systematic and neat city if it is developed as a Smart city but public cooperation would be crucial for the same project, said rickshaw-puller Kh Daulat.
He also underscored the importance of making internet service accessible to every denizen of the city as and when Imphal is developed as a Smart city.
