Imphal, December 05 2015 :
Condemning the State Government's step motherly treatment towards the issues faced by the people particularly the inter-state transporters, Janata Dal (United) Manipur on Saturday demanded the Government to introduce and pass a legislation or bring in an "Anti People Economic Blockade Act" in the Winter Session of the State Assembly.
In a press meet held at the JD (U) Manipur office, Babupara, party President M Tombi stated that both the Central and State Governments have remained silent and were unable to provide security along the national highways in Manipur.
Condemning the frequent harassments meted out to the transporters along the national highways, M Tombi also demanded the Government to adopt an effective mechanism to fix market prices of essential goods.
"Business persons in the State are fixing the market prices not the Government and when some organisations like AMSU tried to control the price, police are harassing the students", added Tombi.
While stating that JD (U) will support any demand which is acceptable under the Constitution of India, M Tombi demanded the Government to protect the transporters and provide basic facilities required by them.
"Even the Supreme Court has prohibited imposition of economic blockades and now it is duty of the State Government to bring in a legislation to halt the anti people blockades imposed along the highways", said M Tombi.
JD (U) Manipur General Secretary Lein Gangte appealed all the organisations to stop using economic blockades as a means of protest while pressing for their demands.
He also urged the Government to act on reasonable demands made by the people.
"Transport policy, transporters safety policy, highway protection act, anti people economic blockade act are needed to be framed at the earliest," said Lein Gangte.
He also demanded resignation of Works and Transport minister Kh Ratankumar on moral ground for failing to discharge his responsibilities.
He asserted that no politics should be played over a vital issue like the ones faced by inter-state transporters.
