Imphal, February 21 2014 :
A disease known as Inclusion Body Hepatitis (IBH) has broke out in some chicken farms of the State and there have been cases of chickens dying of the same disease.
Meanwhile, Veterinary Department has detected outbreak IBH disease.
According to some chicken farmers, sizeable number of chickens have died due to outbreak of IBH at Thoubal, Shamushang, Kongba and Ghari during the past few months.
22 to 35 days old chickens are most vulnerable to IBH.
A chicken which looks healthy and is feeding would simply collapse and die once it is infected by IBH.
Post mortem examination of the carcass found that the chicken's heart was enlarged.
The disease is a recent discovery for the farmers of Manipur and it is suspected that the disease was transmitted from chickens brought from outside the State, said the worried farmers.
One Veterinary doctor informed that IBH has been detected in the State.
It is a viral disease but no vaccine is available in India.
On being enquired, the Veterinary doctor said that there is no harm in eating meat of chickens infected by IBH provided the meat is properly cooked.
