International Mother Language Day observed

The Research Forum Manipur (Reform) and Department of Art and Culture jointly observed International Mother Language Day at Manipur State Archives, Keishampat today.
Highlighting that mother language not only identifies a particular community and illustrates its status but also commands respect from the global fraternity, Director (Art & Culture) Dr K sobita Devi speaking as the chief guest said inclusion of Manipuri language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution has further elevated status of the mother language.
Expressing that blessed with scholars of repute and the enviable Puya there is no reason why Manipuri language should be in the classical language category, she also informed the gathering that a committee has been specifically constituted by the State Government for further promotion of the mother language.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof Paonam Gunindra of Manipur Taibang Maheikol stating that inclusion of Manipuri Language in the Eighth Schedule has paved the way for candidates from Manipur to appear in UPSC-conducted competitive examinations in Manipuri language also mentioned that any community having own language and script is considered among the culturally advanced group of people.
Inspite of fulfilling the criteria to be among the culturally advanced group of people and having its own written history, Manipuris continue to be one of the unique communities that still use script of other community, regretted the academician.
Among others, All India Radio news editor A Ibomcha Sharma, Research Forum president Naoroibam Indramani and its vice president Dr Mangsatabam Lokendra were also present at the observance function.
