Sudha Pillai visits

Sudha Pillai, the newly appointed Consultant of New Land Use Policy (NLUP) of Manipur, made her maiden visit to Senapati district yesterday.
She was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Jacintha Lazarus and other officials.
The team visited Tumuyon Khullen, Farmers Science Centre (KVK), Orchidarium and Katomei village.
The visiting team held a consultative meeting with the Katomei Village Authorities and elders on the usage of land especially shifting cultivation being practised by Nagas.
NGO representatives of the district, elders and villagers participated in the discussion.
The discussion highlighted the impacts of jhum cultivation and massive deforestation.
The villagers told Sudha Pillai that it would be hard to stop jhum cultivation as it is emotionally and economically attached with the them.
They also said that there is no other occupation which they can take up after giving up jhum cultivation.
The NLUP Consultant, who also had meeting with State Officials on June 12, noted the points and suggestions made by district denizens.
