The Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur and Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur strongly opposed the proposed creation of a separate full-fledge Jiribam District carving out the land portion of Tousem Sub-Division, and Nungba Sub-Division of Tamenglong, District, Manipur, according to joint statement issued by Poudin Riamei, General Secretary, Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur and Kadijianbou Pamei, Chairman, ZSUM.
The statement said that any decision taken by the state authority should consult the concerned authorities of Zeliangrong people.
Clarifying that it did not stand against the creation of any district in Manipur or elsewhere as it is for the effective governance and administrative conveniences.
However, if the state government goes against the wish and interest of the Zeliangrong people, then they will not be a mere spectator and we will initiate various forms of protest and agitations.
The statement cited the past occurrence where the Tamenglong district or the Zeliangrong inhabited areas were divided and Zeliangrong people were now placed in different administrative areas in Manipur particularly in Churachandpur District, Senapati District under SADAR Hill and Tadubi areas.
In both these areas the Zeliangrong people have become a minority, the statement added.
It said that in the proposed creation of Jiribam district, the Zeliangrong people will again become a minority community.
The statement further said that Government's decision can be deemed as not against the people alone but the land as well and is making their best effort to please some particular groups.
Therefore, it will no longer trust the Government and the government should never expect loyalty from the people, the statement added.
