Dimapur, June 13 2014 :
Close on the heels of the arrest of 10 United People's Liberation Army (UPLA), a Karbi militant outfit, including its 'commander-in-chief' and 'foreign secretary' by the Dimapur and Assam police on June 8, Rengma Naga People's Council (RNPC) alleged that UPLA is the off-shoot of the Karbi People's Loberation Tigers (KPLT).
The RNPC also alleged that UPLA is nothing but another off-shoot of KPLT in the light of the Central government's decision to ban KPLT as a terrorist organisation.
"RNPC will not be surprised if UPLA again changes its nomenclature after its latest setback," it added.
Rengma Naga People's Council (RNPC) then expressed its regret that it took the deaths of Hamren superintendent of police, Nityananda Goswami and his PSO to waken up the security apparatuses, including the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the danger posed by ethnic militancy in Karbi Anglong, Assam.
"Had the Assam and Central government been more sensitive to the threats posed by Karbi militants upon the ethnic peoples of Karbi Anglong, on December 27, 2013 carnage committed by Karbi People's Liberation Tigers (KPLT) upon innocent Rengmas would not have taken place," RNPC stated.
The RNPC then condemns the act of cowardice of the four police personnel who deserted the superintendent of police in the thick of the battle.
"RNPC is not surprised because in the days leading to the December 27, 2013 carnage, the Assam police refused to venture into Rengma inhabited areas despite repeated pleas to come and protect the villagers," it stated.
According to the RNPC, in some instances, whole villages were burnt down right infront of the police and security forces.
Apart from the actual carnage, the wound triggered by the cowardly attitude of the security forces is still fresh in our people's mind.
The Hamren police officer killing should be a wake up call for the Assam police and a lesson to be learnt that terrorism can strike anyone anywhere, the Rengma body said.
The RNPC expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved families.
