Oriental College becomes State's first autonomous college

Oriental College, Takyel has become the first and only autonomous college of the State.
Speaking to reporters at college campus today, Principal Dr Th Biren said that Manipur is the third State which has an autonomous college after Nagaland and Assam.
The college would get Rs 20 lakhs for infrastructure development every year, he added.
Though the college would still remain as an affiliated institute under Manipur University with drawing salary of college staff from the State Government exchequer, the college would now enjoy the autonomy of setting its own question papers and syllabus, the Principal said.
After the college authority applied for autonomy status, an inspection team comprising of five experts from UGC and one each from the State Government and Manipur University visited the college some time back.
UGC approved the request of upgrading the college to an autonomous institute on January 20 this year, the Principal said and added that the college got approvals from Manipur University and State Government on May 19 and June 9 respectively.
Now the college would be able to introduce job oriented courses on its own, the Principal said and added that the college has also set a target to enhance the academic condition of the college to International level by 2020 by introducing different techniques including imparting education through digital system.
He further said that vocational and job oriented courses like Food Technology, Mushroom Cultivation and Spoken English are being run the college.
