Imphal, June 13 2014 :
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Gaikhangam has stated that Manipuri women, with all their ideal characters and patience, can effectively fight all the social ills and abominable crimes plaguing contemporary Manipuri society.
The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking at the passing out parade of the 9th IRB Constables (Mahilla Battalion) at Manipur Police Training College (MPTC), Pangei today.
He said that MPTC is now comparable to other police training located outside the State.
It has been already upgraded and is fit for training Sub Inspectors and other police officers.
The State would now be able to save a substantial amount of money which otherwise must be spent on sending police officers to other States for training.
As a result of the sustained efforts of MPTC officials and trainers, the college has produced many qualified and efficient police officers.
Noting that the responsibility shared by women in Manipuri society is momentous, Gaikhangam remarked that women are far more meticulous in doing any work as compared to men.
Manipuri women are known for their polite manners and discipline and their valour is a cut above as compared to women of other places, he lauded.
With such fine traits, Manipuri women have all the elements required to control all the bestial and detestable crimes particularly those targeting women and children.
Driven by a belief that women need training for self protection, Chief Minister O Ibobi put into motion to process of setting up women battalion.
The 9th IRB Constable (Mahilla Battalion) would be the first women exclusive battalion in Manipur.
"The passing out parade implies and signifies that you have been trained for self protection and you are prepared to battle all the anti-social activities and their agents", Gaikhangam asserted.
Reminding about their oath to discharge their duties sincerely and impartially in any part of the State, the Deputy Chief Minister called upon the newly trained women Constables to keep in mind this oath whenever they are on duty.
He lauded the women Constables as well as their parents for choosing the profession of police in order to serve the public with a sense of self sacrifice.
Earlier, MPTC Director P Doungel administered oath of office and secrecy to the women Constables.
The training course which started on May 20 last year was participated by 611 women personnel of 9th IRB including 48 women Constables.
However, 42 women constables abstained from the oath taking ceremony as well as the passing out parade citing medical reasons.
The remaining 569 personnel took part in the passing out parade and they were divided into 16 platoons.
