Imphal, September 16 2021:
The United Committee Manipur has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh to stop the ongoing construction and fencing works along the disputed Indo-Myanmar border.
In a statement, UCM also urged the State Government to produce a white paper on the current State boundary where the fencing and construction of subsidiary pillars are taking place.
The UCM reiterated that the Indo-Myanmar border dispute that is a cause of concern for the people of Manipur especially revolves around Border Pillar no 81 .
Saying that an agreement on the international boundary between India and Burma (now Myanmar) was signed on March 10, 1987 , the statement maintained that the boundary issues, however, remain unsolved till date despite several rounds of discussion with mapping experts.
During the visit of Surveyor General of India on July 24 and 25, 2018, it was found that the position of Border Pillars no 80, 81 and 82 was inconsistent, the statement said and added that the UCM recently came across freshly dug fencing potholes while inspecting the disputed site on August 26 and 27, 2021.As a mark of protest, the UCM filled up the potholes, it added.
Continuing that people of Manipur won't accept forceful 'intrusion' or loss of land under any circumstances, the UCM urged the Government to stop the 'ongoing' construction at the disputed border.
