Suicide Prevention Day observed in Thoubal

Thoubal, September 16 2021:
Thoubal District Mental Health Programme on Thursday observed ' World Suicide Prevention Day" under the theme "Creating Hope Through Action" at Health and Wellness Centre, Langathel.
The observance was attended by Wangjing-Tentha AC MLA Paonam Brojen as chief guest and Thoubal Deputy Commissioner Rangnamei Rang Peter as president while CMO Thoubal Dr Y Nokul, District Surveillance Officer Dr Kh Trustee, PHC Khongjom MO Dr Th Somananda were present as guests of honour.
Staff of Health and Wellness Centre, Langathel, ASHA workers and others also attended the observance.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Brojen expressed concern over rising number of suicide cases and stressed the need for preventing the same.
Parents and guardians need to keep close watch on the mental health of their children, he said.
District Programme manager Ch Basanta said that the day is being observed with the aim of spreading awareness among the people so as to prevent suicide cases.
It is the responsibility of each of one of us to help prevent suicide, he added.
In his speech, senior psychiatrist Dr H Angomcha said that individuals are often driven to commit suicide due to feeling of helplessness and desperation to free oneself from pain and suffering.
The situation has been further worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic and its resultant psychological impact.
Suicide can be easily prevented if the signs are detected as early as possible, he said, while adding that concerted efforts of family, society, experts and government are needed in this regard.
District Surveillance Officer Dr Trustee urged all concerned to seek help if they are suffering from depression or are facing mental distress.
He further urged for contacting mental health helpline number 104 to avail the necessary help from experts.
