Imphal, June 19 2014:
Raising serious concern over the sharp rise in the prices of food items in the State, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) on Thursday announced that a comprehensive drive will be launched soon against selling of essential items, especially grocery items like rice and dal, at high price by wholesalers and retailers in Imphal Khwairamband market.
Addressing newsmen at the AMSU headquarters at DM College campus here, Laishram Reagan, Secretary General of AMSU, said that the skyrocketing prices of food items such as rice, dal, pulses, onion, potato and others in the State have seriously hit the low-income families.
"We're checking Khwairamband market soon to find out whether the food items are sold at higher rates against the normal prices fixed by the Government," Reagan said.
The Government should also formulate a broad based price-fixing policy at the earliest and make known to the public about the rates of various food items from time to time, the student leader.
He censured the State Government for allegedly keeping mum on the price hike issue and drew the attention of the Consumer Affairs Food & Public Distribution Department in this regard.
Reagan appealed to the public to extend help and cooperation in its proposed drive against price hike.
