Imphal, May 28 2021:
The Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) has asked the State Government to open a Covid care centre cum drug treatment facility at the earliest.
Addressing reporters at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai, today, drug affair's secretary of MSF Oinam Premdash said that one Covid positive drug user fleeing from a Covid care centre recently was unfortunate but reflected an ugly reality which cannot be ignored.
The MSF however, lauded the Government for opening a drug de-addiction and treatment centre for street-based drug users and handing over 33 drug users to a rehab centre for treatment, he added.
Saying that the emergence of street-based drug users in the State is a matter of serious concern, the federation continued that finding out the drug supplier is imperative to cut the supply line.
It is also important for the authority concerned to hand over these street-based drug users to their families concerned or to shelter homes.
Continuing that it is not only street-based drug users or drug addicts who frequent North AOC that spread Coronavirus, Premdash urged the Government to focus their attention on drug users in every nook and corner of the State too.
He then charged that there is no sign of the Government putting in efforts to end illicit drug trading and poppy plantation in the State.
Premdash also asked the Government to provide treatment facilities to needy drug addicts whose treatment cost cannot be afforded by rehabilitation centres.
He also appealed to all to contact the federation through mobile numbers 9315225487/7005318926 in case admission of drug users to Government-funded rehab centres is denied.
