Imphal, May 28 2021:
The 23rd Meira Paibi Numit was observed on Friday at Meira Paibi memorial complex at Tharo Devi ground, Khurai Salanthong.
The simple observance function held with strict adherence to COVID-19 SOPs issued by the government was attended by key leaders of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, AMAWOVA, MEPWAK, AMUCO and local Meira Paibi leaders and they paid floral tributes to the statue of Meira Paibi.
According to a statement issued by observation committee convener Longjam Memchoubi, security forces tortured people in the aftermath of an encounter that took place between underground elements and security forces at Patsoi Langjing in 1980.In order to save people from the brutal action of security forces, women of the state launched a massive movement.
During the height of the movement, women protesters were picked up by Manipur police and taken in vehicles to be released in area places far from the pick-up point but a woman named Sinam Ongbi Piyari fell down from one of the vehicles and died on May 28 of the same year.
To remember the unfortunate incident, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, AMAWOVA and MEPWAK have been observing the day as Meira Paibi Numit every year since 1999 by forming an observation committee, the statement said, adding the main observance is being held at the Khurai Salanthong complex since 2011.The statement further said that observance of Meira Paibi Numit could not be held with the people and mass gathering since 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic and the observance this year too was held with a simple function and paying of floral tributes by few leaders with strict adherence to COVID-19 guidelines and SOPs.
