CJM rejects bail application

The Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West has remanded Naorem Jupiter (19) to 4 day police custody in connection with burning of houses and properties at Kakwa Huidrom Leikai in the last week of February this year.
N Jupiter, son of Bijen of Kakwa Naorem Leikai was arrested a few days back by Singjamei police allegedly in connection with the act arson which burnt the house of Keisham Ranjan of Kakwa Huidrom Leikai.
Jupiter was produced before the Court through video conferencing after the completion of police custody remand.
The IO of the case also prayed for remanding Jupiter to judicial custody.
The defense counsel, on the other hand filed an application to reject the remand prayer citing that no substantial damage was caused to the house of Keisham Ranjan as charged.
The counsel further submitted that the incident was caused by an unruly mob comprising approximately 200 persons.
As such the accusation against the 19 year old boy is baseless.
The accused is also an innocent student, said the counsel and moved bail.
On perusal of the materials placed before it, the Court observed that there was prima facie material to show that the accused was actively involved in committing the offence and thus remanded him to judicial custody till June 11.Apart from the said case, Singjamei police filed five different applications seeking permission for formal arrest of the accused in connection with five different cases related to burning down and vandalizing houses Longjam Pikto, Longjam Achou, Longjam Jibanlata, godown of Mobile furniture of Keisham Ranjan all located at Kakwa Huidrom Leikai and also for destroying two police vehicles during the February incident.
The IOs of the cases also submitted reasons why his arrest was necessary.
The Court rejected the formal arrest prayer of IO in connection with the destruction of two police vehicles but allowed formal arrest in connection with the four other cases and remanded the accused to police custody till May 31 .
