Freedom fighter S Churachand remembered

The 103rd birth anniversary of freedom fighter S Churachand was observed at the residence of his son Dr S Ibomcha at Uripok Lamboi Khongnangkhong, Imphal on Friday along with offering floral tributes to portrait of the martyr.
The observance function was attended by Dr S Ibomcha and his family members only due to Covid-19 .
Dr Ibomcha, who is also vice-president of MPP, recalled his late father as a freedom fighter, who fought against British, propagated the idea of nationalism and self-reliance among the people.
It is time the present generation understand the importance of self-reliance and nationalism in order to bring a strong Manipuri society, he said.
Born on May 28, 1918 at Bhanubil, Sylhet district in Bangladesh, S Churachand died at Serou in Kakching district in 2005.When he was around 24 years old, he participated in the "No Tax" movement of 1931-32, and freedom struggle for which he spent one year in Sylhet jail.
Later, he also participated in Quit India Movement in 1942 for which he was hounded by the then British government.
He settled at Serou seven years after independence and founded some Meetei villages at Serou and Sugnu areas.
He had remained as pradhan of Serou GP twice in 1967-72 and 1997-2002 .
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also honoured him with Praman Patra Award during the Independence Day celebration of 1972 .
