KWOHR moves SC against economic blockade

Kangpokpi, July 29 2026: The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) has approached the Supreme Court by filing a writ petition, seeking immediate judicial intervention for the removal of the ongoing economic blockade allegedly imposed by Naga civil society organisations on Kuki-Zo inhabited areas in Kangpokpi district.

The organisation said the petition challenges what it described as a sustained and unlawful blockade that has remained in force since May 17, 2026, alleging that it has crippled the supply of essential commodities to Kuki-Zo villages and subjected residents to "collective punishment" .

The rights body stated that it moved the apex Court after the State machinery allegedly failed to take effective measures to end the blockade despite its prolonged continuation.

The organisation contended that the continued disruption of the movement of essential goods has inflicted severe hardship on civilians and has adversely affected the daily lives of thousands of residents in the affected villages.

The petition reportedly seeks immediate removal of the economic blockade and calls upon the Supreme Court to direct the competent authorities to ensure uninterrupted access to essential commodities and uphold the constitutional rights of the affected population.

The rights body alleged that the blockade, which it attributed to the United Naga Council (UNC), has effectively choked the supply of food, medicines, fuel and other essential commodities destined for Kuki-Zo villages in Kangpokpi district.

KWOHR further said the writ petition has already been filed before the Supreme Court and is expected to be listed for hearing shortly.

The organisation said it is awaiting appropriate directions from the apex Court on the matter.
