COCOMI urges for fair relief aid

Imphal, July 29 2026: YK Dhiren, convenor of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), has urged the Government to provide equal relief assistance to all internally displaced persons (IDPs), regardless of whether they are staying in relief camps or living elsewhere.

Addressing a press briefing at the COCOMI office at Lamphel which was attended by several IDPs today, Dhiren said the Government must treat all IDPs equally and continue providing assistance until they can safely return to their native places.

Stating that thousands of IDPs continue to languish in relief camps, he said the Government has not provided this month's ration assistance to displaced people living outside relief camps, while those residing in relief camps have continued to receive the assistance.

He described the disparity as discriminatory and called for equal treatment of all IDPs.

The classification of IDPs into two categories for the distribution of relief assistance is an attempt to create disunity among the displaced communities, he added.

The non-camped IDPs are also victims of the ongoing crisis, he emphasized, adding that the Government should not ignore their grievances.

He demanded that the Government to provide equal relief assistance to all IDPs, regardless of whether they are staying in relief camps or elsewhere.

He also urged the Government to release the ration money for non-camped IDPs for July as soon as possible.

Meitei Council Moreh general secretary L Brojen said the Government's decision not to provide ration assistance to IDPs living outside relief camps is unacceptable.

He said many IDPs are unable to stay in relief camps due to various reasons, including medical emergencies, lack of space, and other compelling circumstances.

The Government differentiating between IDPs based on where they take refuge is unfortunate, he added.
