AAI steps up efforts for gender equality

Sanjeev Jindal, Regional Executive Director, Airports Authority of India (AAI), North Eastern Region inaugurated a workshop on gender equality at the conference hall of the Imphal International Airport (IIA) today.
The workshop was held to spread awareness among all stakeholders at the airport so that there is no discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation, said a statement of Airport Director, S Senthil Valavan, IIA.
Addressing the gathering, Regional Executive Director, AAI, NER, Sanjeev Jindal informed that apart from organising awareness programmes, all airports in North Eastern Region will be imparting skill training to people belonging to the third gender at AAI managed centres to help them find a place to integrate in any of the wide-range airport services.
He highlighted schemes undertaken by AAI in Manipur under the AAI Corporate Social Responsibility Scheme such as the Rs 5 crore Trauma Centre project wholly funded by AAI at JNIMS Hospital, numerous toilets constructed at Government schools across various districts and sports facilities being provided by AAI at Ukhrul.
He also inaugurated a composite sports facility inside the AAI Community Hall premises which houses a snooker room and a room equipped with table tennis board, carrom boards and bicycles of staff posted at Imphal.
Swati Bidhan Baruah, an advocate at the Guwahati High Court, who is also the first transgender to be appointed as a legal Counsel of Airports Authority of India, spoke on gender equality and the problem of "Transgender and its Exclusion in Empowerment" during the programme, said the statement.
