6 drug peddlers held, remanded to custody for 10 days

A combined team of Narcotic Cell, Imphal East and Imphal East district police arrested 6 persons along with 276 grams of heroin worth Rs 55,20,000 in the international market yesterday evening.
The persons arrested under the supervision of SP Imphal East and SDPO, Porompat were produced before Duty Magistrate Imphal East today.
Later the Duty Magistrate remanded the persons identified as Md Washim Akram (21) of Mayang Imphal presently residing at Hatta Golapati, Lemba Yumkhaibam (26) of New Checkon, Ningthoukhongjam Nilachandra (27) of Checkon Mantop Leirak, Md Rijwan Khan (26) of Lilong Khunou, Thongkhojam Baite (33) of Maojang village in Tengnoupal and Hemkhomang Baite (27) of Moreh to 10 days police custody.
The arrested persons along with the seized substance were produced and displayed before the media persons today morning at SP Imphal East conference hall.
Briefing media persons, N Herojit, SP Imphal East stated that a combined team led by Inspector Kh Devkumar, OC Narcotic Cell-IE in presence of Executive Magistrate N Ratankumar, SDC Branch Officer and a team of Irilbung PS led by ASI Md Tamijur Rahman and along with volunteers of Youth Athletic Development Association (YADA) carried out frisking and checking at Soibam Leikai near Citizen Club acting on a specific information about the presence of drug peddlers at the area.
During the operation, two drug peddlers namely Md Washim Akram and Lemba Yumkhaibam were arrested along with heroin concealed in 20 soap cases, the SP said.
From the disclosure of Washim, two more persons who allegedly handed over the seized drug were also arrested at 6.20 pm from Singjamei bazar area along with a scooter.
On spot verification the persons were identified as Ningthou-khongjam Nilachandra and Md Rijwan Khan, said the SP while continuing that they further disclosed that the substance was handed over to them by persons from Moreh identified as Thongkhojam Baite and Hemkhomang Baite.
The police team acted swiftly and managed to arrest Thongkhojam Baite and Hemkhomang Baite from Kakwa Bazar near Vishal Mall at around 7 pm, said the SP who also maintained that the seized heroin weighs around 276 grams and may be worth around Rs 55,20,000 in the international market.
Stating that the seized substance and persons arrested were handed over to Porompat PS for necessary legal action under ND&PS Act, the SP stated it was the fourth major drug seizure by the district police since he took charge as SP Imphal East.
He also appealed to the public to extend cooperation in the police drive against illicit drug and alcohol in the district.
