Imphal, November 04 2014:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has condemned the alleged attempt of the Government of Manipur to usurp the homesteads and prime agricultural lands of Koijam Maring and Laiching Minou Maring villages and surrounding areas and to thereby deprive them of the means of livelihood and residence on the pretext of setting up a Sports University.
"While we do not oppose any initiatives to bring development and infrastructure by any agencies, we take strong exceptions to the disrespect of the ownership of the people over their land and when it will lead to rendering the villagers homeless and landless, and therefore without their only means of livelihood," the UNC said in a statement.
When there are so many other suitable sites for a sports university, insisting on the said area/land in spite of protest by the people, both in written and civil actions, is a reflection of an ulterior and anti people motive on the part of the State Government, the UNC added.
