Coronary artery by-pass operation

Sky Hospital and Research Centre successfully conducted a Coronary Artery By-Pass operation (CABG) in a beating heart yesterday for the first time in the State.
Disclosing the details of the surgery in a press meet held today at the hospital, chairman of Sky hospital Dr Shyamkishore Lairikyengbam said Nungshi Devi (55) of Thoubal district was admitted to Sky hospital after suffering heart attack on Feb 2 with a condition called 'Subtotal blockage.' The condition was serious as all major arteries supplying blood to the heart (left coronary artery) were blocked at origin except for a small branch (Ramus intermedius) which was also 99 percent blocked at origin, he added.
A team of experienced surgeon from Sky Hospital and AMRI Hospital of Mukundapur, Kolkata led by Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and HOD Dr Arijit Datta conducted the six hour long surgery, Dr Shyamkishore said.
Dr Arijit Datta sharing his experience of the surgery said, "Patients with Subtotal blockage is not fit to fly in aeroplane except in air ambulance as there is high risk of death in mid-air.
It is good news for the people of Manipur that such by-pass surgery or any other form of heart surgery can be conducted here at Sky Hospital" .
Post-operation, patients need to take care of their food habits, lifestyle and other activities to control and prevent such heart attacks in future, he added.
Sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, high cholesterol also contributes to heart diseases.
The patient is recovering well and has started drinking water and will be discharged after a week, Dr Shyamkishore added.
