Jiribam, March 01 2016:
The Barak bridge along Imphal-Jiribam road today caved in after an overloaded truck tried to cross it.
The bridge reportedly collapsed at around 2.20 pm while a cement truck owned by ABCL Company carrying 33 tons of cement bags (660 bags) against the 24 tons capacity of the bridge was crossing.
A large number of Imphal bound vehicles are stranded at the area after the bridge collapsed.
ABCL Company has reportedly been asked to accept responsibility for the matter.
According to a source, Tamenglong police had taken over the task of measuring weight of loaded vehicles from The Weight and Measure Department.
The ABCL driver had allegedly lied that he was carrying only 560 bags of cement to get permission to cross the bridge.
This is not the first time such an incident happened.
The Barak bridge which is one of the most important bridges connecting Imphal-Jiribam had seen many such incidents in the past.
