DLSA organises legal aid for inmates

District Legal Services Authority, Thoubal on Monday organised an interaction programme on legal aid for inmates (Under-trials and Convicts) of Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa.
The programme was attended by DLSA chairman Binny Ngangom, secretary Binesh-wori Maibam, chief judicial magistrate Shanta Athokpam and judicial magistrate first class Nemkholam Lhungdhim along with remand lawyers Kh Jeton Meitei and Kh Lembisana Meidingu and PLVs Th Bishworjit Singh and W Jiban Singh.
During the programme, Binny Ngangom explained about criminal proceedings right from registration of FIR to investigation, filing of charge-sheet and conduct of trial in the court.
He also spoke on the rights of inmates provided under Section 12 of Legal Services Authority Act, 1987.The main objective of the interaction is to provide legal aid to under-trial prisoners who are unable to obtain legal help like filing bail application and appealing for convicts, Binny explained while adding that Legal Services Authority helps inmates in contacting and informing their families about their need and other issues.
In all, a total of 96 under-trials and convicts took part in the programme and made aware about their legal needs.
