Bishnupur, June 20 2022:
After finding District Hospital Bishnupur, which caters to people of six constituencies of Bishnupur district as well as denizens of other districts such as Churachandpur, Tamenglong, Senapati and Kangpokpi, lacking in many sectors during surprise inspection conducted by its members, United Development Committee (UDC) Bishnupur has warned of closing down the hospital along with resorting to other form of intense agitations if the government fails to address the shortcomings within 15 days.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of inspection of the hospital by UDC Bishnupur, which is a joint body of 12 clubs of Bishnupur, Bishnupur Municipal Council councillors, mei-ra paibi groups and CSOs, secretary M Bilkee Singh informed that the inspection was conducted after it received complaints about deficiencies of the hospital from various quarters.
Presently, the hospital has 50 beds but due to shortage of doctors, nurses and basic equipment even minor cases are referred to RIMS, JNIMS, Shija Hospital, etc., which is very problematic for people belonging to weaker sections of the society, he pointed out.
Bilkee continued that as there is no proper seating arrangements for patients coming for health check up at the OPD, many of them have to wait at the hospital's courtyard.
Mattresses of the 50 beds were also found to be in tatters due to continuous usage.
In view of all such insufficiencies, only six beds out of the 50 are being occupied by patients, he mentioned.
The UDC secretary also decried that the hospital has no specialist doctor for Medicine, Trauma ICU remains non-functional, toilets have no proper water supply and eye ward is of use.
Though there are two cooks posted at the hospital, they do not supply any food to patients.
Due to such deficiencies, the district hospital is unable t,o provide basic healthcare service to the people, he maintained.
Bilkee further conveyed that it is time the two ministers and four MLAs who represent the six ACs of the district to come together and ensure that Prime Minister Modi's initiative of 'Health for All' is fulfilled in the district.
Demanding the authorities concerned and the government to pay attention towards health care of the people, he claimed that the present District Hospital Management Committee is non-functional, and as such a new Committee should be formed with involvement of deputy commissioner Bishnupur and SP Bishnupur.
The inspection team also included UDC Bishnupur vice president N Mangi Singh, publicity secretary N Bimola Devi and other members.
