Imphal, August 31 2022:
Continuing with its efforts to assist the farmers, United Committee Manipur (UCM) in collaboration with Agriculture Department organised a one-day farmers' training programme cum distribution of urea and Rabi crops at the community hall of Irengbam Awang Leikai on Wednesday.
The programme was attended by Irengbam GP pradhan I Gopen, Ward member Th Landhoni Devi and UCM president Joy-chandra Konthoujam as presidium members.
In his speech, Joychandra urged the government to put the CM's announcement of using the state's handloom and handicraft products in all government offices into action.
The agriculture sector is also part of the handloom sector, through which many weavers make a living to take care of their families, he said.
Joychandra also suggested using of handloom products as school and college uniforms and bags, while observing that the weavers are under threat of losing their livelihood due to influx of printed discounted clothes into the state.
Thus, time has come for the government to stop the printed clothes from entering the state and instead focus on reviving the spinning mill at Loitang Khunou.
If the weavers can make their own raw materials such as the threads, the products can be sold at cheaper prices and compete in the international market, he stated.
As part of the programme, 50 urea bags and seeds of winter crops were distributed to the attending farmers.
